Last week, I started a series I hope to bring you each week highlighting the silly, useless things being brought to you, the American consumer, in a fleeting chance that we might all think about what we are doing before we buy one more thing. If I don’t accomplish that, at the least this is a fun way to kick off the weekend.
This week’s winner is actually not a finished product you can buy, but rather a do-it-yourself kit for the enterprising cyclist. The Popular Mechanics knock off site OhGizmo posted the instructions for creating your own bicycle vest advertising your current speed.
I have a problem with this product in addition to raising the dork-o-meter bar for cyclist higher in less time than a any eye glass mounted mirror or cloth covered helmet could possibly hope. No, my problem is that cyclists fall into two categories- those with the engines big enough to ride over the posted city street limit and the other 95% of us who can’t.
For those who speed, announcing to the police you are over the speed limit is about as dumb as this product. You really shouldn’t invite the cops to nab you. For those who aren’t so peppy, I think the outcome could be more serious than just getting dropped by a grandma on her Schwinn Varsity.
There is already an awful lot of road rage out there right now against cyclists. When a motorist is stuck behind you on a narrow road, I don’t think advertising that you are going 12 MPH is going to help the situation. Instead, let’s all learn a little something about biking in traffic and bring down the level of aggression out there.
Enjoy your weekend, and get out and ride your bike.
