I found this political advertisement through a posting at Bike Portland and was just astonished.
This isn’t just one commercial, either – this incumbent republican house member is also basically saying the same thing in his other ads too. Wow, just wow. By the way, this guy looks like he could really use a little biking and walking (which is one of the main reasons I myself started doing this too!).

Wacky for walking or biking eh?
No more wacky then driving a car to the nearest 7-11 perhaps 2 blocks away for a quart of milk… that’s what many Americans do now.

Yeah, it only seems wacky now, but when peak oil hits in earnest (about 2012) it will all seem pretty reasonable. People will complain, but I think they will also find themselves feeling a bit happier and healthier.

I don’t know if that add is just a Texas advertisement, but it just goes to further show how out-of-touch today’s Republican leadership is with America today.
The USA reduced gasoline consumption by 10% over last year’s useage. This is driving gasoline prices down.
This reduction in gasoline useage is a result of conservation (like bicycling and walking) and not by drilling for new oil.
Apparently, the Republicans who sponsored the adverisement fail to realize that those are real people who are riding bicycles – real people who vote.

Interestingly enough, that congressional district is in NW Pennsylvania, including Erie. Yes, it does get cold, but yes, people, especially including this republican congressman, need to get out of their cars and walk and interact and get some exercise much more often.
