I woke up very, very late this morning, in recovery from election night revelry (yes we’re extremely happy here at Austin Bike Blog, we are heading for a much more transit and bicycle friendly presidency, most likely), only to discover that the Capital Metro strike had begun!
Normally this wouldn’t have much impact on me but I had left my bike at work, and now I needed to find a way to get back there! I ended up walking about a mile and a half from my house to the new transit center on South Congress and Ben White to find a bus route that was actually running… ugh! On the bright side, the fare was free.
Fortunately, my bicycle won’t decide to go on strike, er… as far as I know. My legs might, yes. So… sure, I support the Capital Metro workers’ right to strike, but I’m also very happy to have a different primary way to get around. Jason at ATXBS also wrote a little bit about this, and I think it affects his commute a lot more than mine, since he works down in southwest Austin. There’s more coverage on the strike at the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE.
Anyways, let’s hope for a short strike, and while we’re at it let’s hope for doubling bus frequency, regional rail, streetcars, separated bike lanes, and, most important of all, FREE CANDY!

mmmm chocolate bicycles……The strike isn’t effecting me right now, but that is because I’m not really going anywhere anytime soon. Having a broken leg sucks a big one. I will eventually have to start riding the bus, since I won’t be able to drive for 3 months and won’t be able to ride for maybe 6 months to a year. That is fine with me though, because I still have my job!!!! Also BTW, I put a link up for the petition on my blog. I hope that drives some more signatures your way.
