You think you're feelin' old?
Try being 55, and getting back into cycling, this time as a commuter after about ten years away from my last serious fitness/recreational riding (whilst raising a kid to Middle School age).
I was kinda forced into it when my ol' work-car croaked on me, and now that I live here in Austin, close enough to bike to work (in Houston, I lived some 30 miles from work), I decided not to buy another car to replace the dead one.
It's been a struggle to get back to a fitness level good enough to make that ride to work, and although I haven't really lost much weight in the process, I have been reaping other health benefits, such as a vastly improved cardio fitness level, and greatly increased physical stamina. Not to mention more energy overall, and a general well-being that I had been sorely lacking for a long time.
Two years later, I still haven't even given much of a thought to replacing that ol' car. Even when the wife and daughter take 'the' car out of town on some weekends, I find I can go anywhere in town that I need to with my trusty bike and Cap Metro. It may take longer to get there, but at my age, I'm beginning to appreciate that old phrase, 'stop and smell the roses'.
