The design of Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve (Bettlelab), based in Copenhagen, Denmark, was selected as the first-place winner in the outdoor competition that attracted over 200 entrants from around the world.

One morning, a hunk of metal fell off my car and started dragging on the pavement while I drove down Centinela Blvd. This was after getting a ticket for a burnt headlight, failing my smog test, having my battery die, and having my idle control (whatever that is) stop working altogether –- all in the span of 2-3 months. I was mad at the car, and I wanted to punish it!
Bicycle Friendly Community Presentation, Concept Sustainable
John provided 4 examples that prove that bikes can support a metro’s transportation needs. He showed that in the Netherlands 25% of all trips are taken by bike, and in Boulder the number is 21%. He reminded us of London’s congestion reducing strategies, and explained some of the political initiatives that have helped transform Portland.

In October I was fortunate to be included in a delegation of Austinites sent to Vancouver in order to learn about how they’ve managed rapid growth and become one of the most admired cities in the world. One of their council members, Gordon Price, delivered one of the most impassioned orations about smart urban planning.
