Upcoming Austin Bike Culture Events- 11/20 – 11/30

Once again with ATXBS as our guide, here’s a quick rundown of upcoming bike culture events around Austin. We’ve included events through Thanksgiving weekend to give you a little more time to plan.

Thursday, November 20

Burnet Road Poker Run
8:30 PM, Billy’s on Burnet Road, 2105 Hancock Drive

Join the ladies and fellas from Bicycle Sport Shop for this ride in, krawl home pub crawl. Arrive early to eat some grub and have an adult beverage or two.

Friday, November 21

Rene of Longhorn Bikes Turns 50
Noon-dark, Longhorn Bikes, 2308 E. Cesar Chavez

Rene Martinez, the owner of Longhorn Bikes, is turning 50 and to celebrate, he’ll be cooking free BBQ for any cyclist that wants to stop by. Check out this great local shop.

Drungo Ice House Cyclist Appreciation Day
5- 10 PM, Drungo Ice House, 29th & Rio Grande

The fine folks at Drungo Ice House will be having this party to celebrate Austin cyclists with special drinks, music, and prizes raffled off every 30 minutes. Bike there or be square.

Juan Pelota’s Moonlight Tower Constellation Tour
6 PM, Mellow Johnny’s, 4th & Nueces

This evening ride, scheduled early enough for us foggies, will tour Austin’s 15 remaining Moonlight Towers. There will be free coffee and commemorative spoke cards at Juan Pelota as well as a halfway stop at the Longbranch Inn. Please bring bike lights and bundle up (it looks like it’s going to be cold.)

Saturday, November 22

Yellowbike at Downtown Austin Farmer’s Market
Booth, 9 AM – 1 PM, Workshop: Brake and Shifter Adjustment (
register here), 10 – 11 AM, Yellowbike tent at the Austin Farmer’s Market, 4th & Guadalupe
The good folks at Austin’s Yellowbike Project now have a tent set up at the Austin Farmer’s Market each Saturday with general information, t-shirts, and access to a full tool kit and repair stands for your basic bike maintenance needs. They are doing a series of workshops to help you learn basic bicycle self-sufficiency. This week is brake and shifter adjustment with an upcoming workshops on pannier building. Look for the Tent Revival Bike Choir at 11 AM after the November 29 workshop. YBP asks that you please register here so they can prepare enough materials for each workshop.

Tuesday, November 25

Dirty Derby Cyclocross race series
Registration begins 6 PM, First race at 6:30, Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park, 15400 Pearce Ln, Del Valle

Discover the fastest growing type of bike racing in America, cyclocross. Ride yourself into oxygen debt on road and off road while also dismounting occationally to carry your bike. It’s way more fun than it sounds. This series with beginner, intermediate, and open races runs every Tuesday until January 6.

Friday, November 28

November Critical Mass
5 PM, West Mall on the University of Texas campus

The last Friday of each month means Critical Mass time. Now that you’re stuffed with turkey and football, ride it off counter culture style. This bike jamming ride designed to shout to the world that bikes belong had over 400 participants last month and in September took a peaceful ride on the upper deck of I-35. You never know what will happen, but don’t miss this foundation of the Austin bike culture we know today.

Saturday, November 29

11:30 AM- Tent Revival Bike Choir

Afterwards at 11 AM, there will be a performance of the Tent Revival Bike Choir who will save you from the damnation of the automobile with riotous blessing of voices.
