I’m not usually much for dorky cycling jerseys, but when they call attention to a problem that needs fixing as well as possibly saving your life, I’m on-board. Enterprising cyclist, Joe Mizereck, is now selling a safety yellow jersey online with a huge statement calling for 3 feet of passing space from drivers.

It is offered in 2 versions. The first one says “It’s the Law” on the front for those in states enlighten enough to have passed the 3 feet passing law (Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Oregon, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin). The second is blank for knuckle draggers like Texas.

The Texas Bicycle Coalition worked unsuccessfully during the last legislative session to get a 3 foot passing law passed. They’ll be doing another Cyclists in Suits Lobby Day next spring on April 20, 2009 to push for this and other cycling advocacy legislation. So mark your calendar to join in pushing a bikes belong agenda. In the meantime, stay safe out there, get visible, and consider picking up a 3 Feet Wide jersey while you’re at it.
