Doug Fattic Framebuilding Class Update: The pain of waiting

Waiting, waiting, waiting.

Today, I arrived in Niles, MI to start my frame building class with Doug Fattic. Unfortunately, Doug has symptoms of the flu and decided to rest most of the day in hopes of starting the class tomorrow. I’m anxious to get started and see if I can actually do this thing already! Here’s hoping Doug gets better.

I did get a chance to meet my classmates, Andrew and Robert, who both seem like good guys. Andrew is a software developer who is building a treking/touring bike, and Robert is a Marine reservist just back from Iraq (whoa, that’s incredible) who is planning on building a transportation bike like me.

This evening Doug came over to the house we are all staying in to talk a bit. We got to know each other better and talk about custom bike building and the bike industry in general. Doug is seeing a real heightened interest in utility cycling from his students and the cycling industry. Small bike builders are leading this movement much like they did for touring and mountain biking in the past. Doug also confirmed my theory that the big bike makers follow what the custom builders are doing to look for emerging trends. This bodes we for those of us wanting more choices in transportation bicycles.

So hopefully I’ll begin in earnest with my own project in the morning. I’m ready to get to work.

Looking forward to seeing the frame you build! I’m jealous.
