New DOT Measuring Stick Highlights Need for Transit and Bike Investment, Streetsblog
The Times reported this weekend on the major conclusion of the report — that the transit system absorbed the entire increase in travel within the city from 2003 to 2007. Vehicle traffic remained flat during that period, which saw the city gain 130,000 more residents and 200,000 more jobs. The War Between Cars and Bicycles Continues, Seattle MetBlogs
In this opinion piece, Vesely claims that licenses “would also make cyclists true members of the world of transportation, rather than free riders on the tax rolls.” This is the first misconception that Vesely claims as truth, assuming that Vesely is referring to the Washington State gas tax as the source for pedestrian/bicycle paths. He does not directly state in his opinion piece just how cyclists get a free ride, so I may be taking liberty with my guesses. I did a bit of research and can honestly report back that cyclists do not get a free ride.

This perception about cyclists being outlaws who get a free ride comes from cycling being a minority pursuit.
One of the things that surprised me on moving from the UK to the Netherlands is that in this country you simply don’t see articles like this in the press, letters to the editor, or TV programmes on which cyclists are marginalized or made into scape-goats.
Anything in society becomes acceptable if enough people do it. In this country, everyone cycles.
