Hi all, and Happy New Year to everyone. It’s that time again, to share the latest bike news from bloggers I’ve been reading.
Locally, there are two items of note. First, Rob D’Amico at the Bicycle Austin Blog suggests the city’s Transportation User Fee have the option of supporting cycling projects. Good idea! In the past, citizens who didn’t drive as their main form of transportation could decline this fee, but I agree with Rob, it would be better to just have the option of the money going towards projects cyclists and pedestrians need.
The Professor’s B List puts forth the virtues of Austin’s Yellow Bike Project, a great way to help other people while learning bicycle repair yourself (and joining the greater cycling community).
Keeping to Texas news, in the Dallas area, Bike Friendly Oak Cliff has started to sell nice-looking shirts to support their cause. I haven’t seen one in person yet but they have a photo up on the blog. Great idea and a good cause.
Fort Worthology argues for smarter spending in the infrastructure stimulus bill soon approaching, instead of the same old highway building. It’ll be tough to push for any big changes in this first stimulus bill, I’m afraid. Most of what I have heard so far is that the reauthorization bill later in the year is where priorities really have the chance to change.
Outside of Texas, TheWashCycle reports that, according the Maryland State Police, pushing for bicycle lanes was cause for surveillance by the authorities. We must be awfully dangerous.
Lastly, I found a great new (to me at least!) blog called What I Saw Riding My Bike Around Today. Go check it out. I’ve thought of doing something like this lots of times myself. Speaking of cycling and photography, Austin Texas Daily Photo has a good shot of one of our local unicyclists on New Year’s Day.
