Bicycle News Roundup, 1/18/2009

There’s some really great cycling news out there, the national stimulus package notwithstanding (although having $10 billion for transit in there can’t be all bad, can it?). Here’s what I’ve found in the past week and wanted to share:

  • Treehugger has a great roundup of their own showcasing innovations in bicycle infrastructure around the world of late. Definitely worth looking into if you’re interested in what is working out there. Painted lanes, riding against the traffic flow, all kinds of great ideas in here.
  • Bicycle Spokesman has a story about how “environmental worries” could stop a complete bicycle path from being built in Maryland, but of course could not stop the real environmental hazard of the Inter-County Connector six lane highway. And honestly, what’s more environmentally sound than than eighteen miles of shiny new pavement?
  • TexBiker has some coverage of Saturday’s Copperas Cove Classic, a USAC-sanctioned race now in its ninth year with routes of 54 & . 83 miles. Over 300 cyclists took part this year.
  • Speaking of racing, our own Lance Armstrong apparently got off to a bit of a shaky start in the criterium prelude to the Tour Down Under in Adelaide.
  • Finally ATXBS posts, for your reading pleasure, the text of proposed Texas Senate bill SB488, which would prescribe a variety of things to protect “vulnerable road users” i.e. people not riding around in 3000+ pounds of steel. Will we get a passing law or any other protections this go-around of the Leg? I’m crossing my fingers, but definitely not holding my breath.
