Thursday, January 22
City of Austin Parks update on the Proposed Boardwalk Trail at Lady Bird Lake
6:15 PM, City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department Board Room, 200 S. Lamar Blvd
The Project Team will make a presentation to the Parks and Recreation Board about the progress toward getting a boardwalk built on Lady Bird Lake to complete the hike and bike trail. It shows several revisions to locate more of the proposed Trail on land. Several sketches to illustrate the general design concept are also included. The public is welcome however public comment may be limited.
8th Thursday Night Road Ride
7PM, Drungo Ice House, 2828 Rio Grande
NOTE: New location and route this week. All levels of riders are welcome on this 25 mile night ride with stops to regroup. Lights are mandatory and helmets strongly recommended. Come early and enjoy drinks and food before the ride.
Saturday, January 24
Austin Ridge Riders Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail Maintenance
9 AM, Mopac turnaround of the Greenbelt (at trailhead for Gaines / Twin Falls Access)
Austin Ridge Riders is a mountain biking club in Austin and part of the work they do is to do trail repair so we can all keep riding. Full coverage clothing (long pants/sleeves) is recommended. Also sturdy shoes or boots, sun block, bug repellent, work gloves, eye protection & personal hydration. If you have a pruning saw, please bring it otherwise ARR will provide tools and Clif bars. At 1 PM there will be a lunch break and raffle prizes. Bring your bike if you’d like to ride afterward.
Sunday, January 25
Frost Yer Fanny Duathlon
9 AM, Williamson County Regional Park, Leander, TX
The 2009 Frost yer Fanny Duathlon is back for a third year in central Texas in conjunction with the annual SMW Region Conference. Choose between standard 5K run/21mi bike/5K run course or the sprint 2mi run/10mi bike/2mi run (There is also a 5K run at 8 AM.) Online registration is closed but you can still register in person on Saturday, January 24 from 10 AM-6 PM at the Austin Marriott North, 2600 La Frontera Blvd in Round Rock. The standard is $55 and the sprint $50.
Death Race 2009 Alleycat Race
6 PM, Drungo Ice House, 2828 Rio Grande
An informal in town race and scavenger hunt, alleycat races are a blast and not to be missed. This one has the classic 70s cult film, Death Race 2000, as its theme. You’ll need $3, your bag and some flashy lights to do this race. Costumes from the movie are optional but STRONGLY encouraged.
Concert Fundraiser for Christie
8 PM, The Parish, 214 East 6th St
Christie is a car-free living, local cyclists and avid Full Moon Cruise rider who was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She needs your help to get the treatment she needs to fight this thing. There will be a silent auction and a raffle for a new bike to raise the funds she needs. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and there will be performances by Brownout, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Ruby Rico, Woodgrain, and Deejay Chorizo Funk. Advance tickets can be purchased at Clown Dog Bikes, 2821 San Jacinto.
Monday, January 26
Orange Bike Project General Meeting & Bicycle Education Class
5 PM, Meeting, 6 PM Class, UT Campus, GAR 1.126
The Orange Bike Project allows UT students to check out bikes for their own use. Through their program, students are able to “check out” a bike just as if they were checking out a library book and keep the bike for the entire semester. This allows many students to make their bike their primary mode of transportation.
City of Austin Urban Transportation Commission Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee Meeting
6 PM, One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Rd., Room 325
The Urban Transportation Commission advises the city council, city manager and all other transportation-related departments concerning transportation-related matters. This subcommittee works on bike and pedestrian related issues that are considered by the entire commission.
