Bicycle News Roundup, 2/2/09

Houston’s new bicycle coordinator has a tough job ahead. The Houston Chronicle has a short story on their desperately needed bicycle plan update.

Seattle is installing on-street bicycle parking in place of car spaces. Do we have the guts to do this in Austin?

The Bike-sharing Blog reports that San Francisco is getting a bike-sharing system similar to the one in Washington, D.C. (which I hear is so popular it is already in need of expansion). The SF Streetsblog, however, takes a sour view of the situation.

The Momentum Magazine blog gushes over bicycle rope lights that, in my opinion, aren’t too attractive, but they do at least increase side visibility.

Lastly, I don’t know what the status of our potentially doing this here is, with the upcoming removal of thousands of parking meters in Austin, but LA is joining the ranks of cities that are converting their old meters into bicycle parking.

EDIT FROM ELLIOTT: I didn’t get a chance to talk to Marcus before this posted, but Belgium Knee Warmers did a great series last week in reposting a article by Italian racing great Gino Bartoli written about is teammate and often rival the great Fausto Coppi upon Coppi’s death in 1960. Anyone who enjoys racing history will love this. Check out the four part series starting with part 1 here. (Also continue reading parts 2, 3, & 4)
