Austinite James Clayton, arrested on burglary and theft charges regarding $60,000 worth of high end bikes

Ever since James Clayton was arrested last week on felony charges of high end bike theft and burglary in Austin and Arizona, the cycling community has been abuzz with discussion about the case, but on forums and blogs. Well, add one more source to learn more information about this serial liar and thief.

Today, the Austin American Statesman ran a detailed story about Clayton that included information about his past criminal record which included auto theft, how he made up stories about his past as a professional racer (including an interview he gave on KOOP), and how cycling community helped catch him with references to Jason at ATXBS as a leading force.

The Statesman has come to the story a little late but definitely fills in some blanks about what appears to be a very disturbed individual.

UPDATE: ATXBS has a hilarious take on the psychology of James Clayton and how he became a bicycle super-villain in response to the Statesman story. Check it out.

UPDATE 2: Today’s Austin Chronicle also has a story about the arrest. Not a lot new in the here except an interesting story of how local cyclists Matt Gordon and Val Hargrove figured out it was Clayton that stole their bikes and lead police to him.
