Wheel building class to be offered at Mellow Johnny’s in March

While I was putting together the weekly round up of cycling culture events this week, I came across the announcement that Mellow Johnny’s will be having a wheel building class on Thursday, March 5 and Thursday, March 12. The cost of the class is $200 or $400 depending on your choices and includes everything you need to build wheels in the future.

Here’s the skinny from the Mellow Johnny’s website.

Wheel Building 101 Class:
Wheel building is a great way to learn the basics of one of the most important parts on your bike. Learning the ins and outs of wheels will help preserve your wheels and help you fix them if a problem comes up. MellowJohnny’s will be offering two wheel building and wheel maintenance classes. Each class will feature hands on advice as you build and maintain your wheels.

The course will be taught by our certified wheel builders and will consist of 3 phases. Each phase will break down everything that is required to build your wheels.

Phase One: Collecting Materials

Phase Two: Preparation and Assembly of Parts (2 hours)

Phase Three: Tensioning the Wheel (2-hours)

Space is limited to six (6) people. Please Email aaron@mellowjohnnys.com for more info or to RSVP.

For those who do their own wrenching, wheel building is the sign of an accomplished mechanic. If you haven’t tackled this skill, I highly recommend taking the class. If you are a bike mechanic noob, head on over to our Austin Cycling Events calendar and check out one of the many basic maintenance and repair classes offered by many of the local bike shops or start volunteering at Yellow Bike Project.
