This weekend was a busy one for bike racers. While some of us were watching Levi Leipheimer win his third consecutive Tour of California from the comfort of our sofas, many were braving the elements to race. Here’s a quick round up of local race reports from this weekend.
Walburg Classic- Saturday was a wet, cold, and blustery day worthy of the best Spring Classics. David Wenger from Team Super Squadra gave a great blow-by-blow of the Pro/Cat 1 race including that this was the toughest Walburg Classic in his seven years of racing it. Wenger comments on how his back was hurting during the race from having to constantly lean into the 30 mph+ winds. While Wenger podiumed for third in the Pro/cat 1 field, Mike’s Bike Blog has a report of just trying to hang on in the Cat 5 field. After being dropped off the back at Schwertner, Mike partnered with another racer to form an echelon to get off the course as soon as possible. Also, hating the wind and a gravitationally challenged “Asian dude” was Cat 2 racer Andy McKeegan. McKeegan chronicled his frustration with an uncooperative chase group and 100 pound racer sporting deep dish Zipps wheel causing a crash.
Love Stinks Alleycat Race- Later on Saturday, Les Bennett over at One Les Car took part in this fundraising race for the Capital Area Food Bank and Austin’s Yellow Bike Project. He was dealing with the in-town winds as well. He was happy to finish 13th out of 67 racers but was bummed to find the weiners weren’t ready yet and ended up just eating the bun!
Pure Austin Road Race- Those roadies who didn’t get enough in Walburg on Saturday raced again Sunday at Pace Bend Park in southwest Travis County. The elements were more cooperative but the racing was still tough. Andy and Mike both raced again, with Andy hating life after racing hard Saturday, and Mike racing much better but having to drop back due to a technical. UPDATE: Team Super Squadra has a victorious post on Sunday’s race including shot of the team member Phil Wikoff crossing the line in first.
