Miami has been trying to ramp up their bike infrastructure in a huge hurry the past couple years. The Mayor has committed to spending at least $1 million on bike lanes in 2009, Transit Miami reports.
Elliott’s put together a great list of photos from NAHBS, but I couldn’t help but want to share this page as well – check out the EXTREMELY different bamboo bike!
Bike Date has a very good review of the Gary Fisher Simple City 8. We haven’t done any reviews of the Simple City line here… yet! We have a few commuter bike reviews coming very very soon though.
Lastly, Tempe is getting ready to get its first “Bike Station” at a light rail stop, complete with secure parking, showers and a repair center. I’m jealous.

Gah! Why not just amputate a limb instead of charging their MSRP?
Srsly.

Sorry, about the Gary Fisher Simple 8. It was so spendy! I mean, pretty and nice and seemed to work pretty well. But man, maybe it’s the economy making me feel poor.

Actually, compared to a Dutch bike, that’s a steal, not that its as nice as an Azor, but still for the component spec, I think the price isn’t bad.

I agree. It’s going to be hard for people to find economical commuting choices that still have good features. One bike that I plan to review this week is the Trek Allant, which is supposed to have just about everything on it that you generally need in a commuter (except lights). We’ll see how good it is in practice.

Yeah, I agree that it’s fairly reasonable compared to a Dutch bike. But it just feels like we should be able to get some kind of bike that lets people commute with fenders and a rack for $350. I suppose one-speed is the way to go for that, with a 3-speed upgrade up to $450.
Of course, one can always get a non-X-mart frame off of Craigslist, slap slicks, fenders, and a rack on it, and get in under $200. So there’s that.

Michael,
If that’s the price range you are looking, you could always opt for an imported Flying Pigeon bike. This is the Chinese imitation of the Dutch bike, and Joe Bike from Portland imports them and upgrades some of the components including better brakes. Price is $350 for single speed, $450 for 3 speed. It’s not as nice as a true Dutch bike, but a pretty good basic transportation bike for 1/3rd the price.
