Michael,
If that's the price range you are looking, you could always opt for an imported Flying Pigeon bike. This is the Chinese imitation of the Dutch bike, and Joe Bike from Portland imports them and upgrades some of the components including better brakes. Price is $350 for single speed, $450 for 3 speed. It's not as nice as a true Dutch bike, but a pretty good basic transportation bike for 1/3rd the price.

Yeah, I agree that it's fairly reasonable compared to a Dutch bike. But it just feels like we should be able to get some kind of bike that lets people commute with fenders and a rack for $350. I suppose one-speed is the way to go for that, with a 3-speed upgrade up to $450.

Of course, one can always get a non-X-mart frame off of Craigslist, slap slicks, fenders, and a rack on it, and get in under $200. So there's that.

Michael -

I agree. It's going to be hard for people to find economical commuting choices that still have good features. One bike that I plan to review this week is the Trek Allant, which is supposed to have just about everything on it that you generally need in a commuter (except lights). We'll see how good it is in practice.

Actually, compared to a Dutch bike, that's a steal, not that its as nice as an Azor, but still for the component spec, I think the price isn't bad.

Sorry, about the Gary Fisher Simple 8. It was so spendy! I mean, pretty and nice and seemed to work pretty well. But man, maybe it's the economy making me feel poor.

Gah! Why not just amputate a limb instead of charging their MSRP?
