Reprinted from a League of Bicycling Voters email. This is your chance to tell your next city council members that you want safe cycling to be a priority, and find out where they stand on our issues.
Want to make an impression?
The best way to advance safer and more accessible bicycling in Austin is to show local elected officials that you are passionate about bicycle transportation. And what better way than showing up in mass for the annual political candidate forum?
The League of Bicycling Voters, in partnership with the Austin Cycling Association, Yellow Bike Project and Bicycle Sport Shop, encourage you to attend the:
Austin City Council Candidate Forum
Monday, March 23, 6-9 p.m.
St. David’s Episcopal Church
301 E. 8th Street (at San Jacinto)
This year’s City Council election, taking place Saturday, May 9th, will feature a highly competitive mayor’s race with no incumbent, plus races for:
Place 1 (held by departing incumbent Lee Leffingwell)
Place 2 (held by Mike Martinez)
Place 5 (held by departing incumbent Brewster McCracken)
Place 6 (held by Sheryl Cole).
Leffingwell and McCracken are both running for mayor against candidates Carole Keeton Strayhorn, Josiah Ingells and David Buttross. In the Place 1 contest between Chris Riley and Perla Cavazos, both candidates have earned an almost equal number of early endorsements from community groups. This race is likely to be highly competitive.
Martinez is running against Jose Quintero for Place 2, and Bill Spellman is running unopposed in Place 5. Cole is running against challenger Sam Osemene in Place 6.
At the forum, the candidates will speak about cycling issues, and questions will be fielded from the audience as time permits. This is a nonpartisan event. Secure bike parking will be available.
