Say, anyone notice the complete lack of women in that video. You know there is a whole other half of the population that can turn a pedal too, guys.

They did a similar competition on campus at UT. I bike commute almost everyday so I support the cause but I see little reason to waste time logging details of my bike riding on this or any other web site. Competition can be motivating but the idea of competing against people I don’t know via the Austin Commuter Challenge, going to the effort to organize/join a team, etc. is not compelling.

Surely there are more productive ways to motivate commuters? For example, I pass by the Convention Center every day. How about some free food in the morning there for bike commuters? I saw a similar promotion a couple of months ago for taxi drivers. Or maybe some kind of education campaign? Or t-shirts for people who commute everyday for a certain period of time? These may not be terrific ideas but they are all more appealing to me than the Austin Commuter Challenge.

I would be interested to know if/why others would make the effort to participate in this contest.

FWIW, I did check out the video (mildly amusing) and the website (fine) but the details of the contest just didn’t make it seem worth the bother. Too bad.

Just went back to the website. Now, I realize that if I join a team and my team wins, our team can receive the “Austin Commuter Trophy.” Really? This was the best prize they could think of?

I already bike to work and I don’t want the Austin Commuter Trophy. If I wasn’t inclined to bike to work, would a cheesy trophy make any difference? Really?
