There will be a noon press conference at Austin City Hall tomorrow for the Austin Commuter Challenge contest. Registration for the Challenge will begin shortly after.
From their press release:
May is Bicycle Month in Austin, and Bicycle Sport Shop would like to celebrate with a friendly challenge for Austin and the surrounding area. The Austin Commuter Challenge works to promote cycling as a green alternative for trips to work, school, the grocery store or other destinations that Austinites would normally take by car.
Participation in the challenge is free and everyone is encouraged to compete; Schools, businesses, social clubs or you and your closest friends. Participants will compete on trips to work, school or social activities when they commute by bicycle. Those who face lengthy commutes will be encouraged to use cycling in conjunction with city buses to reach their destination.

Still wondering why anyone would bother to participate in the online contest. Take time to organize a team, log in all my rides, compete against people I can’t see, all for the dream of taking home the Austin Commuter Trophy? Someone please explain how this would motivate someone who doesn’t already bike commute?
