Yesterday at Eastwoods Park I ran into something I haven’t seen EVER before while out shooting photos for our story on bike polo: somebody else was doing it too! I had to stop and talk with my fellow photographer and found out he was Daniel Liebowitz from local cycling blog Thy Neighbor’s Bike. What a surprise!
I put ‘em on our blogroll now and asked Daniel to pass along a little about his site so we’d know where he was coming from. Here’s what he said:
It started in November of last year when my friend bought the domain for me and told me to have at it. Since then it has been a fun project and I’ve enjoyed watching it grow over the months. Initially my idea for it was to have it be a collaborative effort amongst friends with each having their own little column to write about anything bike-related, even including a column my friend wanted to start about how she absolutely detests bikers, but asides from a few stints here and there it has basically just been me posting. I still am interested in turning it back into a collaboration and will gladly set anyone up with a username so that they can post whenever they wish.
As far as the current state of the site, it’s a mix between interesting stories and videos that I’ve come across on other bike blogs as well as a focus on the Austin bike scene. I have recently become obsessed with bike polo, which the site definitely reflects, but there has also been some focus on the alleycat races, the critical masses, and the political dealings regarding cyclists rights in this town. Overall it’s basically just a good mix of serious and ridiculous.
I like that last part, sounds like a perfect description of biking in Austin to me – a good mix of serious and ridiculous. Anyway, I spent a little time last night and this morning reading some of their past articles and they have a mix of hard news and personal insights. Something I must have missed before is the video Elliott posted on bike polo a few weeks back was done by Thy Neighbor’s Bike, too!
