Austin On Two Wheels Rotating Header Image

Please, no autographs

During the East Austin Studio Tour last November I was standing outside some loft condos on sixth street waiting for my wife to get out of a studio and I snapped this shot of some bikes parked just outside:

Beautiful bike!

Beautiful bike!

I had nothing in particular in mind when I shot it (except maybe how glad I was to be out of the really cramped studio I just escaped from) but I’ve always liked that Surly “military green” paint. Later that week this photo was the header for my short little take on getting around E.A.S.T.

The inspiration for that story came from the fact that I kept running into people from the cycling community that weekend and had just talked to Eileen from Mellow Johnny’s for a few minutes at Cafe Mundi.

For a while, that was that. A photo of a bike on Flickr, so what, right? Well a couple months later my photo was used in the Schmap online guide to Austin, I guess because they were short on pictures, or desperate or whatever. Not so bad anyway I guess, since I wasn’t selling my photos or anything like that. So now this bike photo was online in three places: Flickr, my E.A.S.T. post and Schmap.

Just last month a comment appeared on the photo from the actual owner of the bike, Austin cyclist Maureen Grady and so I finally knew whose bike this was! Yesterday, I found Maureen on Facebook and learned this beautiful bike had really been around! All the way up the Pacific Coast Highway, in fact!

Great, huh? This bike has done even more than that but I don’t want to give away anything else. Just read Maureen’s blog for more adventures. This story just goes to show what a small world it can be sometimes.

And wow, what a famous and well-traveled bike. But please, no autographs.
