Movie night at Mellow Johnny’s featuring local framebuilders

Last night was Movie Night at Mellow Johnny’s, a series of weekly events they are trying to continue at least through bike month. This week’s movie night featured local framebuilders in person along with some other custom bikes from various builders.

One bike there was a Hetchins, a beautifully kept vintage bicycle from England featuring incredibly ornate lug decoration. This manfacturer started in the 1920’s, and is still going in some fashion today (it appears that bikes featuring at least the name and look are being built, but by another builder).

Nick Crumpton of Crumpton Cycles was there as well, showing off his custom-designed carbon fiber bikes. His bicycles are among the best known from Austin builders, having been featured in Bicycling, Road Cycling in the UK, and other places.

Another bike being shown was from Austin builder Moyer Cycles, who as far as we know is not building frames anymore. If anyone has more info on the situation, please let us know. He had some beautiful bikes (there used to be a gallery on his website but it’s now only a single page).

A2W writer Elliott was there with a “Pa Ferguson” bike from Violet Crown Cycles. He took a little time to explain the specifications in each bike and some of the features unique to his models.

Along with the bikes from custom framebuilders, there was a documentary about six day races in the 20’s-50’s which wasn’t bad but I have to say went about 20 minutes too long for my taste. The second film shown was Connecticut builder Richard Sachs’ promotional video, which I’ve seen before but is a very good look at a very experienced road bike builder.

There was an attempt to show a video on Brooks saddles, but it failed because the DVD made for the Europe region and not here. Gah! I was thinking the video may have been this one from YouTube, below (and if not, please correct me…):
