One thing that’s been great since we started this site is that we’ve met a lot of great writers from bike sites here in Austin and beyond. Just Monday, for example, we met the writer of local blog Cyclebum.
A couple of the best bloggers we’ve met so far are Anne and Tim from the Seattle site Car Free Days. I started reading their site way before we started Austin On Two Wheels because they were writing about their experiences with XtraCycles and other utility bikes. Since they’re a family with children it was great to see their perspectives on which features were truly useful and which weren’t. Anne has an Azor Oma as one of her bikes too, which was great to read when we were deciding on which Dutch bike we wanted to test. We met Tim in person during SXSW at the BikeHugger Mobile Social and he borrowed my Azor for the duration of his stay.
Anyway, Anne and Tim have written a few articles lately that we think you should read. Here are some highlights:
- We were lucky enough to test a Madsen cargo bucket bike in February for a short test, but at Car Free Days they managed to borrow one for over a week and so they have a very in-depth review of the bike and their experiences.
- Just yesterday they posted some data about how much it actually costs to own a car in Seattle (and how much you can save if you give one up!). The number from the study they are quoting is shocking considering our estimates a couple of years ago from Austin CarShare marketing materials were, I believe, about $6,000 a year or so.
- If you’re looking to buy a bike for your child, their multi-part series called “Kids’ Bikes: They suck and what you can do about it” is a MUST READ!

Hey Marcus — thanks for the love. Right back at ya! I still think it’s amazing that you loaned me — someone you only know from the blog world — your bike for almost a week. Pretty fantastic community we’ve going.
I have a couple more posts on the kids’ bikes in draft form. I’ll try to get them out soon. Your weather is a tad better than ours
and we’re just getting in the kids/recreational riding season.
Keep up the great work!
