Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 5/14- 5/20/09

Bike Month has had some great events so far and things aren’t letting up. If you don’t bike to work, get yer’ but out there Friday for Bike to Work Day with tons of free breakfast stations. Plus on Saturday you can essentially spend your entire day biking from party to party.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendarcontact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Thursday, May 14

Kenny Hill AutoWerks’ Driveway Criterium Races
4:30 PM, Community Rally, 5:30 PM, Races, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln

Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from with a fourth Masters race (40 + years old) running from May 21- August 6 starting at 7:45. Open riding during Community Rally from 4:30- 5:30 PM. Races registration $20, Rally $10. $5 off with 8 oz can donated to Capital Area Food Bank. See our article about the series for more info.

Aspiring or veteran triathletes are invited for a clinic on everything you need to know about tri Apparel and Transitions.

Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave

The Austin Bike Polo Club has added another weekly match to the regular Sunday afternoon affair. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

Texas Mamma Jamma Ride Kickoff Party
6 – 8 PM, GSD&M Idea City, 828 West 6th St
The Inaugural Texas Mamma Jamma Ride debuts on October 10, 2009 and play a huge role in making sure Texans with breast cancer get the services that will save and improve lives. Come eat, drink and learn more about how you can help us leave breast cancer in the dust. Urban Night Ride

A new ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet at Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30p.m. leave at 8:00p.m. sharp. Bring your cameras & twitter phones and get some good sunset shots.

 

Friday, May 15

Bike to Work Day
Starting at 7 AM, Various Locations
Time to bike it like you mean it. Most of you bike for transportation at least sometimes aready, but if you haven’t yet, this is a great day to start. There will be breakfast stations all over town. Check out our recent Bike to Work Day post for more details.

Lunch at the Domain Ride
11:30 AM, The Domain, Domain Dr and Esperanza Crossing

Get an early start to the weekend with a Friday lunchtime ride from The Domain. Make your way over to Parmer and ride up to Avery Ranch Rd and back. The pace tends to be in the 16.5 – 18 mph range, with a few small, rolling hills. Meet at the intersection of Domain Dr and Esperanza Crossing. The ride leave at 11:30 sharp. If you can’t make it to The Domain, feel free to join up during the ride at the intersection of Parmer Ln and Amhurst Dr, where the ride usually has to stop to wait for the traffic light. Minibike Pub Crawl
10 PM, HEB at 7th and Pleasant Valley
Bring your minibike/tall bike/bike with no wheels/bike with 20 wheels/20 wheels with no bike that you run beside/etc. Essentially, bring the craziest bike you can find, or decorate your bike the best you can. 

 

Saturday, May 16

7 AM, Rockin ‘R’ River Rides, 1405 Gruene Rd, Gruene, TX
The race features a 400 meter river swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run, that will be held at the Rockin R facility at Gruene. The bike course is out an back on River Road and the Run is through the quaint town of Gruene.

The Drippin’ 100 Family Fun Ride
8 AM, Nutty Brown Cafe, Dripping Springs, TX
Routes of 10, 25, 50, and 62 (100K) to benefit the Dripping Springs Youth Association.

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: From Mellow’s to the New Nelo’s
8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St

Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme is From Mellow’s to the New Nelo’s. Head north of downtown via the Lance Armstrong Bikeway, Exposition Blvd, Shoal Creek and Far West Blvd with a stop at Nelo’s Pro Cycles new location on Mesa then loop back south via Steck, Woodrow and the Shoal Creek Trail (paved.)Ride organizer: Eileen Schaubert at eileen@mellowjohnnys.com or 512-426-4851.

Ranger Triathlon (Children’s Triathlon)
9 AM, Texas School for the Deaf, 1102 South Congress Ave
The Texas School for the Deaf and Jack & Adam’s is proud to present the 2nd annual Ranger Triathlon. The purpose of the Ranger Triathlon will be to offer kids ages 7 years and older and “first time adults” the opportunity to experience a multi-sport event in a safe and positive environment. While competition is always part of any race, it is not the primary focus of this race. The main focus for the participants their families and the community is to have FUN! Course: Juniors (7-10 years) 100m swim • 2.2 Mile Bike •.5 mile run (track) Seniors (11-14 years) 200m swim • 5.5 mile bike • 1 mile run (mixed terrain) Adults (15+ years) 200m swim • 5.5 mike bike • 2 mile run (mixed terrain)

2nd Annual BBQ Party at Longhorn Bikes

Longhorn bikes is having it’s 2nd. annual customer appreciation BBQ on Saturday May 16 from 10:00am to 3:00pm. at 2308 E. Cesar Chavez St. There will be free food and drinks till it runs out. Come and show off your bike, and enjoy an afternoon at Longhorn Bikes.

East Austin Taco Tasting Bike Tour

Tasty Touring is joining Mando from Taco Journalism to put together a fun, bicycle-friendly tour with stops hand-picked by Mando who is arguably, Austin’s “Rey de Tacos.”

Community Art and Bicycle Carnival
2- 5 PM, Zaragoza Rec Center, 2608 Gonzales St
Don’t miss the fun at the 3rd annual Bike Rodeo and Carnival at Zaragoza Rec Center. Austin Cycling Association will again be providing free helmets for the kiddies, YBP will be providing free kids’ bikes for the neighborhood, and the Theatre Action Project and the Austin Bike Zoo will provide bike puppets and entertainment for all.

 Fast Folks Cyclery Grand Opening

Austin’s latest bike shop, Fast Folks Cyclery, is having its grand opening with the premier of Death Pedal!, the latest fixed gear trick video to be wowing all the cool kids. Party starts at 5, the movie starts at 8 PM.

Bobby’s Extreme Makeover Benefit for injured cyclist
7 PM, Irie Bean Coffee Bar, 2310 S Lamar Blvd # 102
Bobby, the assistant at Rock of Ages Tattoo parlor was recently involved in a bicycle accident with a vehicle. He is lucky to be with us today. He managed to regain consciousness but not without physical damage. The owner of the vehicle did not have insurance leaving Bobby’s parents to cover medical expenses. They managed to get his eye socket back in place but need help getting Bobby the required dental work. Electra Beauty Lounge, Casita Taco, Irie Bean Coffee, Austin Laser Clinic & Rock of Ages Tattoo are working together to raise funds for Bobby’s dental work.

Sunday, May 17

trektriTrek Womens Triathlon
7 AM, Walter E. Long Park
Join Sally Edwards, Series Spokeswoman, CEO of HeartZones USA and Hall of Fame triathlete at the inaugural TREK Women’s Triathlon Series. The Series will consist of sprint distance (1/2 Mi. Swim, 12 Mi. Bike and 3.1 Mi. Run) races in 10 markets throughout the U.S, and promises to be an excellent venue for both novice and professional athletes. Muddy Buddy Adventure Race
8 AM, Flat Creek Crossing Ranch, Dripping Springs, TX
This unique trail running and biking race is sure to be fun and challenging for everyone. Both beginning athletes and experienced racers alike will have a great time along the course and through the obstacles, especially in the infamous Mud Pit!  Each race features a 6-7 mile course and 5 obstacles. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride the bike. At the 1st obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. The runner will arrive, complete the obstacle, find their bike, and begin riding. Teams will continue leapfrogging each other through the entire course. At the end of the race, racers will crawl through the infamous Mud Pit crossing the finish line together!

Xterra Dirty Offroad Triathlon
8 AM, Canyon Lake Park, Canyon Lake, TX
Choose from two distances in this offroad triathlon. XTERRA Dirty: 1500m swim/ 14 mile mtb / 10k trail run theDIRTYtri Sprint: 750m swim/7 mile mtb/5k trail run.

Capital City BMX Weekly Race Series
1 PM, Capital City BMX, 15010 FM Road 620 North

The Capital City BMX opened in November 2008 and offers you a chance to learn and race BMX. BMX races are held every Sunday with rider check-in 1-2 PM. Cost $10/rider. (There is also practice time on Saturday’s. Check Capital City BMX for more info.)

Hardcourt Bike Polo
4 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave

Join fellow bike polo enthusiasts as part of the newly formed Austin Bike Polo Club for a friendly Sunday match every week. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

 

Monday, May 18

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Team Hotel San Jose and Mellow Johnny’s
5:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St

This is a weekly Monday ride reserved just for the ladies! Join experienced and knowledgeable riders from Mellow Johnny’s and Team Hotel San Jose for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). This is a perfect chance to become more comfortable riding in a group, ask questions about pack riding or racing, meet other ladies like yourself who also enjoy riding, and keep up your fitness. We start at 5:30pm and will ride for 1-2 hours.

Mellow Movie Night #4: Reels of Racing

Your gonna wish we provided seat belts in your chairs on this movie night, because these film are all about speed! Classics like Road to Roubaix, Bicycle Racing USA, and a local film about our very own Tuesday Nighter. Hang up your chamois on this night and watch how the pros and the locals do it

Midnight Ridazz Warriorzz Pub Crawl
9 PM, Various Locations
Join in for this monthly pub crawl. This month’s theme is Warriorzz. The Midnight Ridazz crew are pulling out all the stops and having a huge, multi-bike gang scavenger hunt/pub crawl, based on the movie The Warriors. Instead of meeting at Donn’s Depot, you pick a gang to join and they’ll tell you where to meet and search for the other warriors. There are still lead positions open, so if you are interested contact the Midnight Ridazz crew.

Austin 2009 Ride of Silence
6:15 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
On the evening of Wednesday, May 20th, 2009, cyclists all over the world will ride in honor and in memory of fellow cyclists that have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. In Austin TX, we will start an eight-mile ride originating and ending on the Pfluger Bridge. This ride will last approximately one hour. You are riding with the rest of the world in this 7th annual memorial ride.
