For future reference, all VC-led rides require helmets. Our Saturday morning Bagel Shop ride, led by Ted Dunbar, leaves the Einstein's Bagels at Braker and 183 at 8:15. Distance varies between 60 and 80+ miles, and the pace averages 18-20 mph. That means the route out of town will be undertaken at a lower speed, and once in the country, the speed ratchets upward. You might get dropped, but every effort is made to regroup periodically, so no one gets abandoned. There is a fair level of fitness required for this ride.

The Sunday AM Freewheeling ride, led by Dave Henderson (Freewheeling Bicycles, 24th and San Gabriel, 8:15 rollout), usually goes for 50-60+ miles at a somewhat more civilized pace (16-18 mph average). This ride is a little tamer and serves as a recovery ride for many of our racing members.

They didn't say, but the normal FreeWheeling ride falls into two groups, 40-45 miles and 50-60 miles. Average speed is 16-18 mph. I've never been on a Violet Crown ride so I don't know the helmet policy. When in doubt, I'd wear a lid.
