Yesterday, Bike Month wrapped up and I was happy to celebrate with friends and some new folks at the Violet Crown Cycles launch party. The after party ride for snow-cones was a blast and a nice bookend to a tremendous month.
I’ve been regularly participating in Bike Month about five years and even help organize Bike Month one year, and I have to say this has been the best one I’ve seen so far. The Bike Month Guide produced by ACA was great, and there were a ton of well attended events for everyone’s interests. I also appreciate that the bike shops really got into the action this year with free clinics, bike-in movies, and pedal happy hours.
So now what? First, we need to make sure the 2009 Master Bike Plan gets passed with a commitment to full funding at the June 11 City Council meeting. Making the cycling community thrive begins with building a city that supports travel by bike. Click here to see how you can let the Council know your support.
Bike Month should be only a jumping off point to a larger life lived on two wheels. Don’t make Bike-to-Work Day a once a year activity. Keep on biking for transportation and if you still need more help check out our Getting Started section or look on our calendar for upcoming clinics and classes.
There are more cycling culture events everyday, so if you look on the calendar chances are you are going to find something you like. Not finding what you want? Start events or rides yourself! The weekly bike polo and Thursday night rides didn’t exist nine months ago. It just took some folks who wanted to make it happen throwing it out into the universe, and we are richer for it. And if you do start something new, drop us a line about your event, and we’ll promote it and possible do a write up.
The twelve months since the last Bike Month have been a time of tremendous growth in our community. Let’s make the next twelve even better!
