Safe Passing Bill Clears Legislature, Heads to Governor for signature

BikeTexas is reporting that the Safe Passing Bill passed both the Texas House and Senate in the last 24 hours and is headed to the Governor’s desk for signature.

The final version of the Safe Passing Bill, SB 488, was passed yesterday by the Texas House. Today, the Senate voted on it, and overwhelmingly voted to pass it.

That was the final step for the bill to complete in the Legislature. Now, it will be sent to Governor Perry, and we are cautiously optimistic that he will sign it into law. We will know the outcome by June 21, the last day the Governor can sign or veto bills.

The bill will require drives to provide at least 3 feet of distance between their car and cyclists when passing. This was the main initiative of BikeTexas for this session and marks a great victory for the group and cyclists in general.
