Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 6/4- 6/10/09

June’s starting with lot’s of great events, especially if you are a woman looking for help jumping into racing or just riding. And if fixed gear is your thing, you’ll find a growing number of rides in addition to the monthly Fabulous Friday alleycat as well as the new fixed gear specific shop, Fast Folks.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

 

Thursday, June 4

Kenny Hill AutoWerks’ Driveway Criterium Races
4:30 PM, Community Rally, 5:30 PM, Races, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln

Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from with a fourth Masters race (40 + years old) running from May 21- August 6 starting at 7:45. Open riding during Community Rally from 4:30- 5:30 PM. Races registration $20, Rally $10. $5 off with 8 oz can donated to Capital Area Food Bank. See our article about the series for more info.

fastfolksFast Folks Fixie Ride
5:30 PM, Fast Folks Bike Shop, 2513 E. 6th

Fast Folks is hosting an afternoon fixie ride! They will meet at Fast Folks bike shop for a 20 mile loop aroung the outer limits of Southeast Austin departing at 5:30, 5:45 at the latest and head south on Pleasent Valley. The ride will go towards Mckinney State Park on Mckinney St Pkwy, and loop around on William Cannon and back on Knuckels Crossing rd. This route will constist of very few lights, long straight-a -ways, simi-country scenery, and lots of bike riding fun! This will be a casualy dressed ride so bring your fixie, your friends and their fixie, your bags, and good attitudes for a good time afterwards!

Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave

The Austin Bike Polo Club has added another weekly match to the regular Sunday afternoon affair. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

Women’s Road Racing Clinic by Team Hotel San Jose Women and Holland Racing
6:15 PM, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln

Come join the women of Team Hotel San Jose on the 1st Thursday of every month, April through October, for Ladies’ Night at the Driveway. Learn how to ride comfortably and safely in a pack and carry speed through turns, all while enjoying the obstacle-free, perfect pavement of Austin’s premiere race course. Take the clinic at 6:15 and race the Women’s race at 6:45. Cost: $10, or $5 and a canned food item for Austin Foodbank. Urban Night Ride
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge

A new ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet at Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30p.m. leave at 8:00p.m. sharp. Bring your cameras & twitter phones and get some good sunset shots. This week’s ride will be a medium-paced cruise up through downtown and into the campus area, then back down for free beer at The Jackelope. That’s right folks, FREE BEER. Afterwards it looks like a swim at Barton Springs is in order.

 

Friday, June 5

Fabulous Fixed First Friday
5 PM, Fast Folks Bike Shop, 2513 E. 6th St

The first friday of the month means Fabulous Fixed First Friday alleycat races with a new location this month at Fast Folks. Bring $5, a bag, a lock, and a fixed gear bike to race. Registration at 5:00, race starts at 5:30 sharp. There will be a cash prize for the winner. Come and cheer even if you don’t plan to race so you can start your weekend right. After the race there will be a house show at the Whitetooth House which is where the race will end.  Bands for your listening pleasure: Electric Courage Machine, Legsweeper, The United Snakes of America. 

Bike Shop Concert Series at Jack & Adams
7 PM, Jack & Adam’s Bicycles, 1210 Barton Spring Rd

Bring a blanket or chair over to Jack & Adam’s Bicycles on the 5th of every month for a new concert series by Woode Wood! This local musician will strum his guitar & sing some tunes for you & the kiddos. The concerts start at 7pm and are free (but a tip jar will be in place.) The first one is on Sunday, April 5th, with rain out dates set for the 15th of the month (if needed.) $5 suggested donation.

 

Saturday, June 6

Violet Crown Age Based State Criterium
7 AM- 5 PM, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln

Violet Crown Sports Association will be hosting this all day state championship with age categories from juniors (10-12) to masters (70+). The course is The Driveway, location of the Thursday Night crits.

5th Annual Atlas Ride
8 AM, Running Brushy Middle School, 2303 Lakeline Blvd, Cedar Park, TX

The Texas 4000 is an epic 4500 mile journey from Austin to Anchorage, AK to raise awareness for cancer. To kick the team off, there will be a full supported ride as they leave Austin with distances of 50 or 70 miles in the Texas Hill Country. At the end, there will be live music, wine, beer, and BBQ.

9 AM- 1 PM, Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market, Tony Burger Center Parking Lot, 3200 Jones Rd

Austin’s newest framebuilder, Violet Crown Cycles, now has a booth at the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market. Violet Crown Cycles is a builder of custom, handbuilt Dutch style city bikes. View and test ride sample bikes, browse custom options, and have your questions answered about the bike building process and the features of bikes truly built for transportation. Come out and see the bikes and get some fresh, locally grown food while your at it.

Austin Mountain Bike Patrol
9 AM, Walnut Creek Municipal Park 12138 N. Lamar Blvd

Sponsored by the Austin Ridge Riders, the Austin Mountain Bike Patrol (AMBP) promotes bike safety and proper trail etiquette, as well as providing minor first aid and mechanical assistance to all trail users as needed. You don’t need to be a skilled bicyclist to ride with us, but you must wear a helmet and have a mechanically-sound mountain bike to participate. If you do plan on riding with the patrol, always call beforehand to confirm, as the weather and/or trail conditions may necessitate a ride cancellation. Vern’s “No One Dropped” Memorial Ride
9:30 AM, Elgin Park & Ride, FM-1100 & N Hwy-95, Elgin, TX

This ride is a memorial ride for Vern Cantwell who passed away on April 15, 2009. The ride will go on some of Vern’s favorite roads and include a water stop. Come join friends and family in remembering Vern. Ride organizer: Patti Summerall p_summerall@yahoo.com or cell at ride 512-799-4833.

austincommuterchallengeAustin Commuter Challenge Celebration
10 AM, Bicycle Sport Shop Central, 517 South Lamar Blvd

As part of Bike Month, Bicycle Sport Shop sponsored the first Austin Commuter Challenge. The program allowed individual riders and teams to log and track their bicycle commuting miles as part of a competition to encourage bicycle commuting. To celebrate the Challenge and award the winners, BSS will be hosting a party this Saturday.

 June Full Moon Cruise
11:59 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, Lady Bird Lake

These cruises have been going strong as an annual event for over 25 years now but have become a monthly affair in the last two years. This month’s theme is Full Strawberry Moon: The Algonquin tribes knew this Moon as a time to gather ripening strawberries. It is also known as the Rose Moon and the Hot Moon.

 

Sunday, June 7

Danskin Women’s Triathlon
8 AM, Walter E. Long Park

The triathlon that started the women’s only race trend. Sprint Distance .75K Swim, 20K Bike, 5K Run.

Sunday Morning Fixie Ride
8:20 AM, Posse East, 2900 Duval St

The ride is focused on fixed-gear bikes, but everyone is welcome. The ride will proceed at a social pace from the UT campus north through central Austin, then west above 183 and back down the west side of town. This week’s ride will be about 27 to 28 miles, all on city streets. The terrain will be much less challenging than last week’s ride. Really.

The Arrival & Departure of Flight Awesome Ride
9 AM, The Peddler Bike Shop 119 W. North Loop

Quick out and back of 30 miles to the Airport. Down Springdale to Bolm, then through neighborhoods and ultimately doing the loop around Presidential Blvd. and back the way we came. We’ll go at a brisk pace but I kept this one flat so I could do it on my single speed. Coffee at Epoch after. Ride organizer: Greg Ritter at gritter@tca.edu or 512-906-6709.

Capital City BMX Weekly Race Series
1 PM, Capital City BMX, 15010 FM Road 620 North

The Capital City BMX opened in November 2008 and offers you a chance to learn and race BMX. BMX races are held every Sunday with rider check-in 1-2 PM. Cost $10/rider. (There is also practice time on Saturday’s. Check Capital City BMX for more info.)

Hardcourt Bike Polo
4 PM *NEW TIME: 2 PM*

Join fellow bike polo enthusiasts as part of the newly formed Austin Bike Polo Club for a friendly Sunday match every week. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

 

Monday, June 8

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Team Hotel San Jose and Mellow Johnny’s
5:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St

This is a weekly Monday ride reserved just for the ladies! Join experienced and knowledgeable riders from Mellow Johnny’s and Team Hotel San Jose for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). This is a perfect chance to become more comfortable riding in a group, ask questions about pack riding or racing, meet other ladies like yourself who also enjoy riding, and keep up your fitness. We start at 5:30pm and will ride for 1-2 hours. 

Ride Like a Girl Women’s Mountain Bike Rides
6 PM, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Zilker Park Access

The Austin Ridge Riders are hosting a five month program of weekly Monday evening women’s mountain bike rides, plus weekend rides at local mountain bike trails/parks. This is an opportunity to meet other women to ride with, learn new trails and learn new skills. Each ride will divide up into groups based on riders’ abilities and speed and will have a beginner clinic/ride, intermediate, and advanced group rides. Rides will last 1 – 2.5 hours. Prizes and gift certificates from our sponsors will be raffled away after every ride. All riders must wear a helmet, bring plenty of water, and have a trail-worthy bike in good working condition. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time.

 

Tuesday, June 9

CANCELLED: CAMPO: Bicycle/Pedestrian Subcommittee
1:30 PM, 505 Barton Springs Road, Suite 700

CAMPO has an ad-hoc committee known as the CAMPO Bicycle & Pedestrian Subcommittee that was formed to address regional bicycle and pedestrian planning issues. The committee has both citizen and member jurisdictions representation and has taken on a variety of bike/ped planning tasks, in addition to becoming a resource for bicycle/pedestrian coordination and information sharing.
