We recently got this e-mail from the Rachel Fields, one of the authors of the new local cycling blog Two Chicks on Bikes.

My friend, Kathleen Rabe, and I are currently cycling around Europe for 2.5 months. We have been keeping a blog, Two Chicks On Bikes, of reflections on long distance cycling, how-to’s on freelance camping, best handicap bathrooms to ‘bathe’ in, European cycling style and our lack of it, and oh! the absolute necessity of a ‘girl’ seat. Absolute. While researching the trip back home, we had trouble finding info on long distance cycling, specifically from a female perspective; which is one reason why we started this blog and another why I am sending it to you so that potential European cyclists can get the lowdown. Kat and I are from Austin, Texas. In the fall she will begin studying ceramics at Alfred University in New York state, while I will continue my work in fashion design and writing. We are both, what we call, commuter cyclists–our bikes get us to and from work but if they break we mosey down to the shop and let one of the skinny guys in cut-off jeans fix it. Haha, now however, now got this ourselves after an on the road crash course in Zen and the Art of Bicycle Repair. We hope you enjoy.

What are ‘girl’ seats? I didn’t know there were different ones for the two genders.

Michael,
Some saddle makers sell women specific saddles. They tend to be wider and shorter. I’ve not been sure if this is legit or just marketing, but I’ll trust the Two Chicks on this one.

Rachel is a great writer. (Sorry, but her friend, not so much. Luckily, Rachel did most of the writing and it’s hilarious and insightful.)

Rachel is also the cute one. Brown hair, great smile- she’s they type of girl I’d want to take on a bike trip.
