Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 7/9- 7/15/09

There are a lot of great events this week including the Thursday night Urban ride which seems to get bigger and better each week, a Tour de France photo show the same night, a ladies alleycat race on Saturday, plus the pièce de résistance Breaking Away memorial Little 500 race on Sunday.

Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Thursday, July 9

Kenny Hill AutoWerks’ Driveway Criterium Races

4:30 PM, Community Rally, 5:30 PM, Races, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln

Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from with a fourth Masters race (40 + years old) running from May 21- August 6 starting at 7:45. Open riding during Community Rally from 4:30- 5:30 PM. Races registration $20, Rally $10. $5 off with 8 oz can donated to Capital Area Food Bank. See our article about the series for more info.

Thursday Night Bike Polo

5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave

The Austin Bike Polo Club has added another weekly match to the regular Sunday afternoon affair. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

letour_artBrent Humphreys’ Le Tour Photo Exhibition

6- 9 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St

Le Tour is an ambient photo study of the Tour de France by photographer Brent Humphreys. The images that Brent has captured over the years are a testament to what a colorful and unique event the Tour de France really is, seldom seen through the coverage received on domestic TV and media sources. Brent started this project in 2004 and has returned every summer since as part of an ongoing book project. This launch of his Le Tour project benefits the LIVESTRONG. The show will consist of 15 large scale first edition prints, limited edition posters, and a booklet as a show accompaniment. Behind the scenes video and vintage tour footage set to French music will compliment the photography. Wine and hor d’oeuvres will be provided by Royal Blue Grocery.

Urban Night Ride

A ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet at Pedestrian Bridge at 7:50p.m. leave at 8:20p.m. This Thursday they are playing more games in the park. Get ready for more Texas footdown, more slow races, more cargo bikes and more night riding fun. Ozone Bike Department, Bicycle Sports Shop and Sweet Leaf Iced Tea will be providing prizes

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride Shop Road Ride: Public Art Bike Tour

8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St

Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme is Public Art Bike Tour. Join the ride for a campus tour visiting works in the UT Landmarks public art program. The stops are all on campus, and they have added some new works to the previous tour. Ride from the bike shop but have a second departure at 9:00am from outside the Blanton Museum Cafe on the UT campus near MLK and Congress. (The Cafe is located in the west building.) You’ll be joined by docents to fill us in on the artists and the pieces themselves. The total distance is 6 miles and will travel at a novice-friendly pace. Come by at 8:00am for pre-ride coffee. Monthly Austin Ridge Riders Club Ride, Picnic and Camp-Out with Ride Like A Girl

9:00 AM start with events all day, Lake Georgetown

Join the Austin Ridge Riders for their monthly ride and group meeting. It includes free entry and free food and beverages for members. The ride starts at 9:00 am and there will be activities and games in the afternoon. Everyone is welcome to spend the night campning at Cedar Breaks and enjoy breakfast with ARR in the morning. Double Down Ladies Alleycat Race

5 PM Registration, 6 PM Race, Texas Capitol Grounds

“Double Down” is an all-ladies alley cat style race. Registration begins at 4:30pm at the capitol, and the race begins at 6pm. The race has a Las Vegas/gambling theme, so come dressed up because there will be prizes for the best costumes, as well as several other racing categories. Fast Folks Cyclery (2513 E 6th St.) will be hosting the after party/award ceremony starting around 8pm, complete with beer, food, and a few great surprises. Registration for the race is $5, and admittance to the after party for non-racers will be $5, the proceeds of which will go to support the Austin Yellow Bike Project. Racers should bring a lock, a bag/backpack, money, and water.

Couples Triathlon

8 AM, Decker Lake, Walter E. Long Park, 6614 Blue Bluff Rd

Couples Triathlon is a sprint distance triathlon that is completed individually, but scored in a unique fashion. Using a format that is unique in the sport of triathlon, teams of two, whether they be friends, spouses, or family members combine their ages and sign up in the appropriate category. Each person on the team does the entire triathlon, and then their times are combined for the overall results. One may also participate as an individual. Course: 800m Swim/11.2 mi bike/3.1 mi run

Yoga for Cyclists

8: 30 AM, Bicycle Sport Shop Central, 517 South Lamar Blvd

If you ride and do yoga… or are wondering if there are some “moves” that would help your cycling, please join us for this class on Sunday, July 12.

Love Yoga founder Lauran Janes will be the instructor. She has been practicing and teaching yoga for nearly a decade. She’s dedicated to teaching yoga as a means of giving people tools for better understanding the bio-mechanics of the physical body, the underlying holding patterns of the mental and emotional bodies and the interconnectedness of the whole being.

As a bicycle commuter for nearly three years, she became acutely aware of how cycling affects various regions of the body. In this workshop learn how to effectively open the chest, release the hamstrings and hip flexors, lengthen the lower back and unlock the hips…and support a great cause (the Austin Flyers Womens Race Team)! Capital City BMX Weekly Race Series

1 PM, Capital City BMX, 15010 FM Road 620 North

The Capital City BMX opened in November 2008 and offers you a chance to learn and race BMX. BMX races are held every Sunday with rider check-in 1-2 PM. Cost $10/rider. (There is also practice time on Saturday’s. Check Capital City BMX for more info.)

Breaking Away Little 500 Race

6 PM, Kealing Middle School Track, 1607 Pennsylvania Ave

This year marks the 30th anniversary of arguably the best cycling film of all time, Break Away. to celebrate, Mellow Johnny’s, Rapha, and the Alamo Drafthouse are putting on our own Little 500 track race. Ten teams of four will race for the ultimate prize on Bianchi Pista’s which will be for sale at a reduced price afterwards. After the event there will be a free screening of Breaking Away at Mellow Johnny’s at 9 PM.

Monday, July 13

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Team Hotel San Jose and Mellow Johnny’s

5:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St

This is a weekly Monday ride reserved just for the ladies! Join experienced and knowledgeable riders from Mellow Johnny’s and Team Hotel San Jose for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). This is a perfect chance to become more comfortable riding in a group, ask questions about pack riding or racing, meet other ladies like yourself who also enjoy riding, and keep up your fitness. We start at 5:30pm and will ride for 1-2 hours.

Ride Like a Girl Women’s Mountain Bike Rides

6 PM, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, 12138 N Lamar Blvd

The Austin Ridge Riders are hosting a five month program of weekly Monday evening women’s mountain bike rides, plus weekend rides at local mountain bike trails/parks. This is an opportunity to meet other women to ride with, learn new trails and learn new skills. Each ride will divide up into groups based on riders’ abilities and speed and will have a beginner clinic/ride, intermediate, and advanced group rides. Rides will last 1 – 2.5 hours. Prizes and gift certificates from our sponsors will be raffled away after every ride. All riders must wear a helmet, bring plenty of water, and have a trail-worthy bike in good working condition. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time.

Monthly Bike Time Trials by RunFAR Racing Services

5:30 PM, Mopac Veloway, 4848 La Crosse Ave

RunFAR Racing Services is back doing their twice a month TT series on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. An approximately 8 mile Bike Time Trial, the race is free or all Chip Owners. You can rent a chip for $5.00 if you do not own a chip or forget your chip. You may purchase a chip at the RunFAR Store OR we will have personal chips for sale at registration. First cyclist starts at 6pm. Riders may start at their discretion. Registration begins at 5:30pm and closes just before 6:55pm. Course: S. Mopac Loop. Starts on the southbound shoulder just past La Crosse Ave. And finishes on the northbound shoulder just before La Crosse Ave. Results will be posted ONLINE ONLY.

Bicycle Theft Resolution Subcommitee Meeting with Stakeholders and Business Owners

Continuing the work started last month, APD will meet again with the cycling community to create strategies to combat bike theft.

Weekly Women’s Ride with Austin Flyer’s Team

6 PM, Bicycle Sport Shop Central, 517 South Lamar Blvd

Join local cycling team the Austin Flyers for this weekly women’s ride. The ride will leave from BSS Central Location (Lamar and Barton Springs) every week except for the last Wednesday of the month when it will leave from BSS North location (183 and Braker). This is a relaxed-pace, no-drop ride open to all levels and will last up to two hours. If you have any questions about the ride, please email
