A well executed rider change at speed at Austin's Little 500
On Sunday, eight teams of 4 riders competed for the ultimate prize, winner of the Little 500. The 300 lap track event put on at Kealing Middle School in East Austin was put on by Mellow Johnny’s and Rapha as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of the best cycling film of all time, Breaking Away. Alamo Drafthouse put on a showing of the film afterwards.
Tube sox, speedos, tie-die, and large mustaches were abound in celebration of this 70s classic (though I didn’t see any Dave Stoller wife beaters.) I was unable to stay for the finish which included a spectacular wreck with a rider sent to the hospital, but I did get a chance to take these photos.
UPDATE
Eileen at Mellow Johnny’s let me know that Team 420, the crew in tie die shirts and cutoff jeans, won the competition. Adam Biechlin, the Team Woolly Mammoth racer who crashed, is OK but believed to have a broken collar bone. The turnout for the film filled the Mellow Johnny’s parking lot.
