Nashbar customer info compromised, credit card fraud possible

nashbarlogoIf you’ve made a credit card purchase from Nashbar, or its parent company Performance Bikes which has two stores in Austin, in the last eight months, you might want to check your credit card statements for possible fraud. BikePortland is reporting that the discount bike parts mail order house had its customer database hacked back in December 2008 but is just now sending notices to customers about the security breach.

Nashbar has admitted that their customer’s credit card information was stolen in a security breach, yet they waited seven months to notify anyone about it and when asked to provide more information about the incident, they refused.

There have been other reports of fraud possibly conntected to Nashbar/Performance on Bike Forums as well. Perhaps this is another good reason to buy from your local bike shop?

They got me, but the card company shut my card down before they could finalize anything – even one of the same places mentioned in the article tried a charge.

I hadn’t done business with Nashbar for a while before that, but they did have my credit card number on file – so it’s not just grabbing numbers as they were used, they must have gotten their entire customer list.

Pretty gross that they knew for months but didn’t let anyone know. I had some fraud recently that I thought was a problem from another vendor, but maybe this was the source. I haven’t bought anything from Nashbar in years, but I do have a Performance Member card that was “automatically” renewed (irritating) a few months ago meaning they had my card info.

    Isn’t Performance Bike a `local bike shop’ ?

Sure, owned by people who don’t live here, but the employees live here, they ride with us, etc.

    Doug,
Performance is a national chain with stores in Austin. It is not a local business. Local business means owned by people who live our community. This means the profits (not just salaries of employees) stay within the community increasing our overall wealth rather than leaving the community for a company located elsewhere. This is why it’s better for our community and our local economy to shop at Bookpeople instead of Barnes and Noble and your local bike shop instead of Performance.

If I can’t go knock on the door of the owner, it is not considered local. In this case, I’d want to do some serious knocking if it were local. Instead, Bike Portland was given the customer service runaround from an anonymous call center.

I have been a victim twice this year. Its too early to say for sure, but I think I just found the explanation.

I’ve had 3 credit card numbers stolen within a year. Each card had been used at Performance or Nashbar within a month of having the card stolen. Based on what I’ve read on the web, I believe they are responsible for this. I will not use them again, in spite of my enthusiasm for cycling. dennis
