Austin on Two Wheels turns one year old today

Help make year Two even better with your contribution of stories and reviews

bdaycakeWhew, what a year.

One year ago today, Marcus and I launched Austin Bike Blog after a conversation at the Netroots Nation conference in Austin. We started the site as a place to promote transportation cycling and share our thoughts on the bike industry in general.

Gradually, we added product reviews, Dumbest Product of the Week, and event coverage. In February, we relaunched the site as Austin on Two Wheels to cover as many aspects of Austin bike culture as possible. We started our comprehensive calendar of cycling events, began profiles of people in the bike industry including frame builders and bike shops, and began covering important public meeting that affect our community. Our readership has grown to over 20,000 visitors/month, and we are growing all the time.

We are constantly changing and trying to make this site better. One of the changes is that Marcus will be stepping back as an everyday contributor, instead writing less frequently. I am also hoping to start some A2W sponsored events in the coming months to fill some gaps in events we currently don’t have in Austin.

This means we need guest writers more than ever. We have been luck to get submissions for other Austin cyclists like training advice from Sara Krause and mountain bike coverage from Logan Maynard. We are looking for people willing to write about whatever aspect of Austin bike culture you are plugged into but especially are looking for content in the following areas:

  • Race/event coverage: If you are participating in a race or ride, share it with the rest of the community through our site.
  • Women’s cycling: Most of our writers are men, but there is a growing list of women specific events, races, and training here in Austin, and we want to cover the other 50% of the population as well. We’d like your help to represent more of the cycling community.
  • Mountain Biking: Logan started writing a few months ago, but broke his arm and has been out of commission. I’m a die hard roadie who doesn’t own a knobby tire bike. Let’s get some more off road representation.
  • Product reviews: Is there a product you use that is especially good or bad, and you want to share your experience with others? We want you. We also get products and books sent to us from time to time and don’t always have the time to write about them.
  • Biking with kids: I have a family and have written about my experiences, but there is a lot more out there. I want folks to know that cycling doesn’t stop with the birth of a child.

Thanks for reading and let’s go for another!

Happy birthday y’all! It’s been a good year for the Austin cycling community, and really great for me to have another decent blog around to point people to for the non-completely insane side of Austin cycling. Keep up the great coverage, as I always look forward to reading it.
