Riders from 42Ride make stop in Austin
Last night was the kickoff for the Gold Sprints series here in Austin sponsored by the vodka maker 42Below. Gold Sprints are an indoor race where two bikes on trainers are set up next to one another and riders sprint against each other for fame and glory. Their speed and progress is projected on a screen for the crowd to watch and cheer. 42 Below is sponsoring the series in conjunction with stops on the Bicycle Film Festival which hits Austin next week.
After watching about a dozen races I joined with BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings in getting our butts kicked by Team Schaubert, made up of Eilleen Schaubert from Mellow Johnny’s and her husband, Joel. Robin raced Eileen and I raced Joel. I ended up at the bottom of the men’s division while Eileen placed third among the women.

BikeTexas ED Robin Stallings hits it to go for the win.
In addition to the Gold Sprints, there riders from 42Ride, a group of 42 riders crossing the U.S. from New York to Los Angeles to raise moeny and awareness for the Alliance for Biking & Walking, AKA the Thunderhead Alliance. The alliance is a North American coalition of grassroots bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations that works to support and share resources among member organizations to create more walkable and bikeable communities.

The riders are split evenly into a north and south route team. We got the south route visiting in Austin and many of them participated in the sprints. They have been riding since June 25 averaging 80 miles a day. I spoke with one of the riders who didn’t mind the mileage but could sure use a rest day (they have not had a rest day since they started a month ago.)
There will be seven more chance for you to prove your metal in the fight for the ultimate prize, the Gold Sprints, in the coming weeks:
Tuesday, 7/28 at Eden (San Antonio), 6pm-9:30pm
Wednesday, 7/29 at Beso Cantina, 10pm- 12mid
