Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 7/30- 8/5/09

The Bicycle Film Festival is still a week off yet there are tons of events going on this week including Gold Sprints, Critical Mass, an alleycat race benefiting the Yellow Bike Project, and my favorite “just for the shirt” triathlon, Jack’s Generic Tri.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

GoldSprints-23sm42Below Gold Sprints Series
6- 10 PM, Cuba Libre, 409 Colorado St

If you are not familiar with Gold Sprints, it is an indoor race where two bikes on trainers are set up next to one another and riders sprint against each other for fame and glory. An open source program called OpenSprints projects the speed and virtual distance covered up on a screen for the crowd to watch and cheer. Consider it the ultimate spectator friendly bike competition. For more on the Gold Sprints, see our recent article on the series.

Friday, July 31

Friday Coffee Run (Straford Extended Play Remix) Hosted by Austin Cycling Association
7:30 AM, San Francisco Bakery and Deli, 2900 W Anderson Ln # L
This is a quick workout ride that starts early to beat the heat. The route takes us through Crestview, Hyde Park, UT, and downtown. Then, it picks up the Lance Armstrong Bikeway, Stratford and Lakeshore to get to Scenic and Balcones before ending with three difficult climbs on Mt. Bonnell, Mesa and Ladera Norte. The lights and stop signs make it difficult to keep a true B pace on an urban ride, but we’ll work hard to keep things moving with quick starts and a brisk pace. We’ll stay on quieter streets, but this route goes through the city, so be prepared to deal with some traffic. Stratford Remix version adds some occasionally steep rollers before Scenic. Ride time: Approximately 1:45 Distance: 26 mi. Ride Organizer: David at davidtietz@me.com or 512-297-1492

Critical Mass Ride
5 PM, West Mall, University of Texas Campus

This bike jamming ride is designed to shout to the world that bikes belongs and occurs on the last Friday of the month. You never know what will happen, but don’t miss this foundation of the Austin bike culture we know today.

Saturday, August 1

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride Shop Road Ride: Trekking the (Paved) Trails
8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme is Trekking the (Paved) Trails. Today’s beginner paced ride traverses some of the downtown bike trails including the Shoal Creek Trail, Johnson Creek Trail and a section of the Lance Armstrong Bikeway. Plan on paved trails, if we need to use the Town Lake Trail it will be short and we will walk it if our tires are too skinny for gravel. Ride organizer: Eileen Schaubert at eileen@mellowjohnnys.com or 512-426-4851.

Waller Creek Bike Tour
10 AM, Mexican American Cultural Center Plaza, 600 River Street
The Waller Creek master planning process is well underway. This is an effort to redesign the currently underutilized downtown creek into a premier community space. The master planning process will help us decide what kind of space we want and what kind of activities we want to promote to activate the space. A key issue shaping the decisions is the facts on the ground — the condition of the creek and the creekside amenities today. Hop on your bike and join us for a two-wheeled exploration of the opportunities and constraints for this future community hub. The tour will end with appropriate libations at the Crown and Anchor.

Sunday, August 2

Jack’s Generic Triathlon
8 AM, Texas Ski Ranch, New Braunfels
A great triathlon event that is short enough for the beginner, and still challenging enough for the experienced athletes to ‘light it up’. Held at the Texas Ski Ranch, this is an event you definitely don’t want to miss. Jack’s Generic Tri, is, well, it’s Generic. Created as a return to the events of old, when everything was all about the participants. Jack’s is one of the best well run, safest, and most fun triathlon events you will ever do. Course: 500m Swim, 13.8 mile bike, 3 mile run

This is a relaxed-pace, no-drop ride open to all levels and will last up to two hours. If you have any questions about the ride, please email Tammy Thompson.

Casual South Austin Wednesday Night Ride
6:30 PM, Don’s Automotive 1636 South 1st St, Austin
Leave from Don’s Automotive 1636 South First between 6:30 – 7:00.  About 10+ miles, average a little over 10 mph.  Lately the ride has been doing a loop including Barton Hills Blvd and some hills like Lund St.  We avoid the Hike and Bike trail for being too crowded.   Nothing highly technical or competitive but the ride would be difficult or impossible with a single speed or cruiser type bike.  This group is certainly not the fastest but not the slowest either. Ride organizer: Don from Don’s Automotive, 512-447-9032
