Hertz, the giant car rental company, has a car sharing service, called Connect By Hertz which is expanding to new cities very quickly. For an overview, I recommend this Dave Brooks article today in World Streets. This is interesting because Hertz seems to be taking on Zipcar, the current largest carsharing service, directly.
From the article:
The new carshare on the street, Connect By Hertz, is showing it means business. After the initial launch in Manhattan, London and Paris, Connect spent some time getting their feet on the ground. But they were busy in the spring and by this summer Connect had expanded their New York fleet to over 400 hundred vehicles – competing in Zipcar’s sweetest neighborhoods all over Manhattan.
If anything, attracting this much effort from Hertz proves that carsharing is a serious market. Personally, I’m glad to see major players get involved because it helps to legitimize the concept, but would always prefer to support a local company, like our own non-profit Austin CarShare (which, I should add, Elliott founded).
