BSS owner Hill Abell served on the StreetsSmarts Task force that helped in the Master Bike Plan revisions and a has been a leader in Austin cycling advocacy for years. Bicycle Sport Shop is rolling out a new series of bicycle mechanic classes so you can learn to wrench your own steeds. In addition to their free weekly Thursday general maintenance class and once a month women’s only class, BSS has added a $45 wheel truing class in September. Students will learn wheel theory, all aspects of truing (lateral, radial, dish, and tension), and how to assess and repair wheel and rim damage. All the tools will be provided, but students wanting to purchase tools after the class will received a 20% discount.
I can tell you once you learn these basics, you’ll have the skills to build your own wheels. Not only is this a cool bit of knowledge, but it’s also my favorite part of building up a bike. Watching a collection of spokes, a hub, and a rim become a wheel is very satisfying.
The wheel truing class is limited to six students per class, so sign up now if you are interested. BSS plans to offer additional more advanced classes in the future if these go well.
