LOBV adds staff, Bike-in Movies with Beer, and update on City bike projects

lobvThe League of Bicycling Voters recently sent out a newsletter with some interesting developments including the hiring of an Executive Director, Tom Wald. Tom is active in the cycling community serving on the City of Austin Bicycle Advisory Council as well as the person running Orange Bike. The hiring of a staff person shows the LOBV is definitely stepping up their game. Congrats, Tom.

Staff aren’t free, so the LOBV is having a series of Bike- In Movies in October at the Triangle. Admission is $2 and beer proceeds benefit the LOBV. Thursday, October 8 will be The Goonies and and Thursday, October 15 will be Bottle Rocket. Movies will start around 7 PM or once its dark.

Finally, lest you think the Austin Master Bike Plan was just a piece of paper and not real improvements, the LOBV sumerized six projects City staff are currently implementing.

1) Plans for bike lanes on West Sixth Street from Lamar to Patterson (MoPac). Get the details here: http://www.lobv.org/westsixth.html
2) Bike lanes and reverse angle parking put in on Dean Keaton
3) A road diet and bicycle lanes on Duval to Parmer
4) A road diet and bicycle lanes on Steck from Burnet to Shoal Creek
5) Parking modifications (e.g. no parking in bike lanes) for: Mary Street from Congress to the Railroad tracks near Lamar; Brodie Lane (William Cannon to Alexandria), Medical Parkway, Exposition, and Chicon.
6) Upcoming projects in the works are Martin Luther King bike lanes from Pearl to Red River, and a climbing bike lane on Rosewood/E.11th.

The LOBV is doing great work, and if you don’t believe me, check out their 10 Great Reasons to Join LOBV Today!
