David Byrne cycling round table coming one week from Sunday

Next Sunday, September 27, author, cyclist, and former Talking Heads front man David Bryne will be coming to Austin to lead a round table discussion on the future of cities and transportation. This event is being hosted by the Austin Public Library Friends Foundation and is part of Bryne’s tour promoting his new book, Bicycle Diaries, which went on sale earlier this week. (Hopefully, we’ll get a copy to review for you soon.)

Our own award winning Annick Beaudet from the City of Austin’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program will be a part of the discussion as well as Jana McCann, the architect and urban designer heading planning firm ROMA’s work on the Downtown Austin Master Plan. Admission is free but priority seating will be given to those making a donation. RSVP‘s are recommended.

Bryne is famous for his singing career but is an avid urban cyclist having discovered the freedom of exploring cities with a folding bike two decades ago. He also recently designed some arty bike racks for New York City.

***UPDATE: The League of Bicycling Voters is also helping to put on this event and are in need of some volunteers for next Sunday.

  • Volunteer coordinator: someone to coordinate all below!
  • Bike Parking monitors: Keep an eye on bike racks outside Paramount. We’ll run them in 15 minute shifts so you can watch the panel as well.
  • Audio Visual Tech: Someone with basic computer/audio/visual skills to help with computer/video presentations. Paramount will have someone on staff as the lead, but we’d like to have an additional person to help as needed.
  • Printing help. Someone to help pick up, deliver and distribute printed pieces
  • Flier distributors — we’ll have a flier out shortly by PDF. If you ware willing to print and distribute some, let me know.
  • Gopher — one person to hang around the stage and do anything asked!
  • “Ushers” to keep crowd flowing and directed

If you are interested in helping out, please contact Rob D’Amico at damico@lobv.org.

Ironically, unlike his biodiesel bus tours with his band (the joys of which he just wrote about on his blog, which include arriving in new towns in the Am and having all day to ride around), this book tour is a jet-setting one – we in Seattle get him the day after Austin, then San Francisco-Portland-LA.
