Last night, the League of Bicycling Voters had an organizational meeting to recommit to Austin cycling advocacy and build a stronger, professional organization. At the meeting were leaders from most of the larger cycling organizations in town including Austin Cycling Association, Austin Ridge Riders, Yellow Bike Project, and Bike Texas as well as community outreach staff from Bicycle Sport Shop and Mellow Johnny’s. The event was a who’s who of Austin cycling leaders who came to a common goal: making Austin’s streets safer for cyclists and increasing the number of people moving on two wheels.
The LOBV has recently stepped up its efforts with hiring of its first staff, Executive Director Tom Wald. They are working to formalize the governance of the organization and set priorities for the next year and long term future. In addition, a local bike summit was planned for mid November. The summit will be open to the public and will be a way for individuals and groups to get plugged into cycling advocacy and set the agenda for the future. It is hoped that this will be an annual event to continue to nourish advocacy and address issues as they come up in the community.
This was the first time such a broad array of leaders came together in one room for the cause and many were hopeful. Long time cycling advocate and publisher of Bicycle Austin Micheal Bluejay said “I think this is the most exciting day for Austin cycling advocacy since 1993″ (the beginning of Critical Mass.)
