As predicted earlier today, the wet weather means no Dirt Derby this week: We’ve got to cancel again. Lots of rain overnight, and it’s looking like it’ll rain tomorrow evening as well. Stay warm and dry folks. We’ll let you know if an alleycross is in the making.

Family of 5 rides 7000 from Kentucky to Alaska on tandem
Coming back from Lubbock this holiday weekend, we encountered the flip side of the vision of a city in denial I observed. About an hour into our trip, we saw a an enormous bicycle contraption heading the other direction with five people on it. Seeing a cyclist at all in West Texas is unusual, but [...]
Thoughts from the road: Preparing for $20/gallon gas
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, we loaded up the car (rental car in our case) and headed to Lubbock to see the in-laws. During this trip, I began reading “$20 Per Gallon“, a book about how our world will change with the inevitable rise of oil and gasoline prices in the coming years. I’ll do a [...]
Weekly Event Calendar Followup: We missed a few!
Since I had to book it out of town early on Wednesday for the holiday weekend, I did the weekly cycling event roundup a day early. In my haste, I missed a few events including the November Critical Mass which was last Friday. I can’t think of a better way to spend Buy Nothing Day [...]

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming [...]

“Bike building is a lot like the Internet. They both involve a series of tubes.” Elliott McFadden,Violet Crown Cycles This fall, I was contacted by a customer wanting a Ferguson city bike as a possible replacement to his car. He lives and works downtown and was ready to give car free living a try. The [...]
Dirt Derby a no-go this week
Word from the Dirt Derby: Sadly, the track is again too doused from rain for enjoyable riding or even parking and we must cancel. We wish you a very merry Thanksgiving and a safe Black Friday, for those who celebrate it. We are still awaiting word on whether there will be an alleycross in its [...]
Gobble Gobble, Turkey Day alleycat a go!
With the Thanksgiving Holiday coming on Thursday, we’ll be doing our weekly roundup of cycling events around Austin a day early on Wednesday this week. Rest assured just because the rest of us are stuffed with turkey and dressing while dozing off to football doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of opportunities to get out and [...]
Wanting more cyclists on the road? Look to what women want
A recent Scientific American article suggests that if we want to get serious about getting more people riding bikes for transportation we need to focus on the needs of one group in particular: women. The article quotes several reports that show cities and countries with high bicycle usage also have a near equal male/female usage [...]
