Cyclist injured in hit and run on New Year’s Day needs your help finding the driver

Over the weekend, KVUE ran this story on Mariel Mentink, a Chicago resident who was severely injured in a hit and run accident early New Year’s Day while coming home from the Social Cycling ATX New Year’s Eve ride.

Police are looking for a gray or silver SUV or truck with recent front end damage which was identified by a fellow rider at the scene. That someone would hit a cyclist and flee the scene without rending aid is pretty disgusting. If you think you’ve seen this vehicle or know anything about the accident, please contact APD at (512) 472-TIPS.

I was recently hit by a guy cycling here in Austin, and we found the car. APD told me that finding the car does no good criminally unless you can identify the driver (or are willing to lie and say you can). So even if you find the SUV, the jerk still got out of failure to render aid felony for fleeing the seen. Civil suits on the other hand….
