Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thursday, January 14
Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave
The Austin Bike Polo Club’s weekday match. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.
Hill Country Ride for Aids Kickoff Party
7 PM, La Zona Rosa, 612 W 4th St
In 2009, the Hill Country Ride for Aids raised over $650,000 to help people in Central Texas living with HIV/AIDS. This year’s ride on Saturday, April 24, 2010 aims to raise $700,000, but we need your help. Join us for our kickoff party to meet other riders and sign up for transformational event.
Thursday Night Social Ride

A ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. that has gotten so big it had to abandon the Pfluger Bridge start location. Meet at 7:30 p.m. leave at 8 p.m. Read our recent article on the popular weekly ride.
Friday, January 15
Traffic Skills 101 sponsored by Austin Cycling Association
5 PM, REI Gateway, 9901 N Capitol of Texas Hwy, Ste 200
Do you want to ride your bike but are afraid of traffic? Or are you an experienced cyclist who would like to learn how to get more courtesy and respect from motorists? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, you should take Traffic Skills 101, the League of American Bicyclist’s (LAB) street cycling course for adults. Traffic Skills 101 will help you ride safely and effectively – to work, to the store, around your neighborhood, or around the state. Traffic Skills 101 is taught by LAB-certified instructors, and the curriculum covers everything from bike selection to simple maintenance to fixing a flat, to strategies for riding a bike safely and confidently. It is taught to very small classes (generally 5 to 10 students), in two sessions: 4 hours on a Friday evening and 5 hours on a Saturday morning. Registration is required.
Saturday, January 16
Super Squadra Cycling Clinc Road Ride
9 AM, Bicycle Sport Shop, 517 S Lamar Blvd
A free ride with the pro riders of Super Squadra for those who signed up for the Beginner or Advanced road racing clinics. Includes lunch afterwards at Bicycle Sport Shop. Registration required.
Texas Age-Based Cyclocross State Championship
9 AM- 5 PM, Travis County East Metro Park, 18667 Blake-Manor Rd
Part of the Lone Star Cyclocross Festival (LSCF) which will consist of two days of racing with $2,000 in prize money. The LSCF will be staged out of the stunning East Metro Pavillion – a large, dry, lake front venue featuring a large dock and covered porch that allow views of 80 percent of the course, as well as a kitchen facility and real bathrooms. The course will feature a mix of grass, pavement, and concrete path. There will be UCI-legal barriers, a sand pit, a 90 degree turn next to a pond, off-camber turns, and a natural run up or fly-over.
Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Rollingwood and Vine
NEW TIME: 9:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme is Rollingwood and Vine. Today’s ride is a more challenging route than usual with the hills of Rollingwood and an option to ride a short section of Loop 360 with it’s wide shoulders but faster traffic. The mileage is low at 14 miles but requires some experience. These rides are meant for exploring so bring your questions and leave your heart rate monitor at home. Come by at 9:00 for coffee. The Revival film premiere & Alleycat Race
7 PM, Hot Mama’s Espresso, 2401 East 6th St
Come enjoy the premiere of the new fixed gear film, The Revival, and race an alleycat while you’re at it. $5 to race at 7 PM. Movie at 8 PM is free. Sponsored by the newly updated ATXFixed.

Sunday, January 17
Texas Skill-Based and Single Speed State Championships
8 AM- 3 PM, Travis County East Metro Park, 18667 Blake-Manor Rd
Second day of racing as part of the Lone Star Cyclocross Festival.
Super Squadra Road Racing Advanced Cycling Skills Clinic and Tactics Seminar
8:30 AM at The Driveway Austin, 8400 Delwau Lane and 12:30 PM at Bicycle Sport Shop Central, 517 S. Lamar Blvd.
If you’ve wanted to road race or are just looking to improve your skills, now’s your chance to learn from some of the best local pros. Bicycle Sport Shop’s pro team, Super Squadra, will be hosting a series of road racing clinics in January for both the beginner and more advanced racers. The skills clinics are $80 and the tactics seminars are $40. You can register for both for $110, $50 for Juniors. All participants can join in on a free 50-80 ride with Team Super Squadra that includes lunch afterwards at Bicycle Sport Shop on Saturday January 16.


Sunday Morning Fixie Ride
10:20 AM, Posse East, 2900 Duval St
The ride is focused on fixed-gear bikes, but everyone is welcome. The ride will proceed at a social pace from the UT campus on various routes of 25-35 miles.
Hardcourt Bike Polo

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Mellow Johnny’s
3:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
Starting at 3:30 sharp, it’s a 2 hour ride for ladies only. Join experienced riders from Mellow Johnny’s for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). Get more comfortable riding in a group, learn tips & tricks, and meet other like-minded cyclists. Stay afterwards for champagne and strawberries at Royal Blue Grocery across the street! Some things to keep in mind before meeting us for this ride: Have a road bike in good working condition, Bring a helmet, Wear cycling clothing, Bring plenty of water, Are able to ride comfortably for 2 hours without stopping.

Wednesday, January 21
Hump Day Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
11 AM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, Lady Bird Lake
The latest new ride from Social Cycling ATX. Social paced ride for the riders that can make it out during the work week. We will have a few stops one at a coffee shop and one for lunch. All levels are welcome. Share with your “funemployed” friends.
Weekly Bike Maintenance and Flat Repair Classes hosted by Mellow Johnny’s
6 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St
Every Wednesday at 6pm Mellow Johnny’s has bike maintenance and flat repair classes. Learn how to fix a flat tire and add life to your bike with simple maintenance and repairs. Please RSVP to Chuck at chuck@mellowjohnnys.com if you plan on attending on of the classes. Classes fill up quickly so RSVP soon so you don’t get left out!
Wednesday Night Road Ride XXVII
7 PM, Check site for start location
Formerly the Thursday Night Road Ride, this after dark fitness ride returns after a 7 month hiatus. All levels of riders are welcome on this 20-25 mile night ride with stops to regroup. This is a “friendly drop” ride. This means that if we can see your lights, you won’t drop be dropped. Lights are mandatory and helmets strongly recommended. Come early and enjoy drinks and food before and after the ride.
