Tommy Eden, Jason Whaley hurt in separate accidents

Over the weekend, we got news of the two separate instances of leaders in the cycling community being injured on the road. First, ATXBS is reporting that Austin cycling advocacy pioneer Tommy Eden was hit while riding Thursday night.

LOBV board member Alonso Txirrindulari reported:

last night a car hit Tommy Eden, lifelong bike activist. He was in the hospital till 3am. Now he’s doing fine but it seems he’s gonna be out of the recumbent for some time. I am hoping to see his American against war sign on the streets soon.

Tommy was one of a handful of people fighting for cyclist’s rights and good facilities for the last 20 years, and we owe him a debt of gratitude.

In other news, fellow cycling blogger Jason Whaley from Road Rash 360 was injured in an accident while driving his car on December 29. He suffered broken bones and a head injury but is slowly recovering and looking forward to getting back out on his bike. Bicycle Sport Shop has set up an online get well card here for those wanting to express support for Jason.

A2W hopes both these unique treasures of Austin’s cycling scene recover quickly and are seen riding our streets again soon.

    Elliott,

For the record, I am not a LOBV board member. I am a member and I support LOBV full heartedly, but I am not a board member.
Regarding to Tommy, the last I knew he was doing fine, albeit shaken for the accident.
I look forward seeing him tomorrow at the LOBV monthly meeting.

Thanks for reporting on Tommy to the cycling community at large; he certainly deserves we care for him as he has cared for all of us for all these years.
