Friday Film Fun: Disney does bike polo

The Austin Texas Bike Polo Social Club is celebrating their one year anniversary this weekend with a two day, three match weekend of bike polo. While wide spread bike polo is a relatively new part of current bike culture, it actually is a sport that is 100 years old and was very popular in the 1920s and 30s. In fact, Disney put this Donald Duck cartoon together in 1938 that featured Donald’s bike polo playing nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie.

I think Disney captured the anarchist, anti-authority persona that characterizes the modern urban fixed gear culture in these young punks ducks. I’m trying to determine whether the nephews are wearing their beanies ironically or not. (The fact that Donald serves them a dinner which includes a cooked whole bird is bizarre. No wonder they’re rebelling again their cannibalistic uncle.)

ATXBSC has really taken off in the last year with lots of media coverage, a new local league with a dozen teams, and now three weekly matches on Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as their standard Sunday afternoon. With the Tuesday night match literally across the street from my daughter’s daycare, I really do not have an excuse not to try this out. Check out Marcus’ article for more on this fun, growing sport.
