Nueces Bicycle Boulevard Open House #3
Wednesday, February 24 @ 6 PM
Pease Elementary, 1106 Rio Grande St.
Join Social Cycling ATX for a social ride and movie viewing party after the open house tonight!
As the first major project in the new Austin Master Bicycle Plan, the City of Austin is considering creating the first bicycle boulevard on Nueces Street downtown.
This proposed traffic calming to accommodate cyclists of all skill levels has caused a vocal opposition to appear, an opposition that has used misleading and inaccurate statements as well as wild accusations to attempt to torpedo this vital new infrastructure.
You have a chance to have your voice heard at the final in a three part series of open houses on a proposed bicycle boulevard for Nueces Street from 3rd Street to MLK downtown. All are welcome at this public forum which starts at 6 PM tonight, Wednesday, February 24 at Pease Elementary, 1106 Rio Grande Street, across from the ACC Rio Grande campus downtown.
Bike boulevards are on-street bike routes that limit car traffic to slow, local only traffic with the use of traffic calming devices like bollards, medians, one way only car traffic, and roundabouts. The goal is to create a bike way that is welcoming to bicyclists of all experience levels.
Bike boulevards will provide a return to making room for all road users while increasing property values and helping local businesses. Despite what some say, Texans really can get out of cars and live life on two wheels everyday.
The League of Bicycling Voters has put out a bike boulevard plan for Nueces Street as well as a petition in support of this plan.

Click here to sign the petition in support of the LOBV Nueces Street Bike Boulevard Plan.
Please attend tonight, sign the petition and contact the Austin City Council in support of the LOBV plan for the Nueces Street Bike Boulevard.
Your participation is CRITICAL! A successful bike boulevard on Nueces Street will mean a network similar facilities throughout the city in the future.

I thought the turnout last night was fantastic! I almost wrote it off since it was at 6:00pm and it’s hard to get from work to downtown in that time. But my wife and I made it (somewhat shamefully in the car).
First thing I noticed was hundreds of bikes locked up all around the school. It was really impressive. It made us wish we had left work a couple hours early so we could ride down.
Anyway, just wanted to let Austin know I’m proud of our biking scene. We really showed up for this one.
