Friday Film Fun: Cycling and Parkinson’s

Last week, the New York Times published a remarkable story about some Dutch doctors that discovered individuals so afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease that they cannot walk still are able to ride a bike without any trouble. Apparently, they think cycling uses a different part of the brain than walking (which might explain why cycling is so good for my mental health.)

Here’s the amazing footage of the patient that lead to the discovery who it turns out can’t walk two feet unassisted but rides six miles each day.

Before you put a friend or relative you know with Parkinson’s on a bike, know that while the riding ability seemed unaffected by the disease the patients still needed help getting on and off the bike and getting started pedaling.

Leave it to the Dutch whose culture is so ingrained with the bicycle as everyday transportation to make this discovery. If it were up to us Americans, we’d probably discover that Parkinson’s has no effect on our ability to operate a barcalounger.
