Austin on Two Wheels is pleased to announce Austin CarShare as our latest site sponsor. If you read this site much, you know I’m not much of a fan of automotive culture and its negative effects on our society. So why Austin CarShare? Well, aside from the fact that I founded this organization and it’s near and dear to my heart, carsharing is a great way to maintain access to a car when you really need one while reducing general car use and all the enormous monthly expenses associated with car ownership.
There has been a lot of hub-bub lately surrounding another for-profit carsharing scheme, but Austin CarShare is your local, non-profit carsharing service that’s been around since 2006 and offers a lot more than 2 seater cars. The fact that they have a pickup truck is reason enough to join. Plus they’re less expensive ($5/hr & 55¢/mile), and now that they’ve gotten rid of the old security deposit, it’s super cheap to join.
If you use a bike to commute or just generally get around, Austin CarShare can be a great option when you need to get to an across town meeting or pick up a week’s worth of groceries. They’ve got a really easy to use reservation system which also means the car you reserve will be there when your ready to pick it up.
If you’re not a member of Austin CarShare, check it out. We’re thrilled to have their support.

Car Share vehicles also have bike racks, while that “other” car share does not…

I’ve used the Car Share to get to Real Ale and Armadillo rides. It’s very convenient and the bike racks are great.

I’ve been using Austin Car Share for almost 3 years since going carfree, great to have the cars available when I needed them and knowing I always had a backup, just in case, allowed me to have a carfree/carlite lifestyle without the worries about “what if I really need a car” times that come up once in a while.
